Malvern Gemini II Rotational Rheometer
The Malvern Bohlin Gemini II Rheometer with the ETC and CVO2006 Peltier incorporates a patented Rotonetic 2 drive with adaptive control technology allowing solid and fluid capability optimized for both strain controlled and stress controlled operation. It has a broad torque range extending to 200 mNm making the Gemini suitable for a wide range of applications.  The ETC is a forced gas oven ensuring rapid temperature changes (from -150oC to 550oC) with excellent conductivity and minimal thermal gradients within the sample. The Peltier system avoids the necessity for a separate fluids circulator with a cup and bob measuring system and is designed with rapid temperature changes in mind and allows ramping rates of 30oC per minute.

TA Instruments - Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer - Q800
The TA Instruments Q800 Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer is for viscoelastic measurements from 1 kPa to 1,000 GPa with a temperature and frequency range from room temperature to 600 C.  The amplitude range is 0.5 to 10,000 microns with a resolution to 1 nanometer.  The Q800 provides ultra-sensitive force measurements down to 0.0001 Newtons, which can fully characterize the viscoelastic response of individual fibers (through the Film and Fiber Tension Kit) and the resin (through the Three Point Bend fixture or the Dual Cantilever Beam fixture). The Gas Cooling Assembly is included as well to allow the full utilization of thermal loadings down to -150 C.

JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope
The JEOL JSM-6610LV is a Scanning Electron Microscope with 5x to 300,000x magnification. The GUI Imaging System has slow scan frame storage with up to 2560 x 1960 x 8 bit resolution.  Specimen chamber has five axis, asynchronous motorized and automated adjuster.  Includes a closed-loop water recirculator with a water to air heat exchanger for cooling the DP system.  Includes a microtest tensile stage module for SEM with a high load (5,000 N) dynamic testing stage module operating in tension or compression.  Includes a video capture system.

TA Instruments - Differential Scanning Calorimeter - Q20
The TA Instruments Q20 Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) with modulated DSC measures temperatures and heat flows associated with thermal transitions in a material over a range of -90 C to 550 C. The properties measured by the Q20 includes glass transitions, "cold" crystallization, phase changes, melting, crystallization, product stability, cure / cure kinetics, and oxidative stability. System includes the Modulated DSC for precise control of amplitude and period oscillations for heating and cooling.  The Refrigerated Cooling System is a two stage cascade vapor compression refrigeration system for programmable or ballistic cooling over a temperature range of -90 C to 550 C.

TA Instruments Thermogravimetric Analyzer
The TA Instruments Q50 Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA) with Mass Flow Control measures the weight change within a material as a function of both time and temperature under a highly controlled atmosphere.  This device is essential in understanding a material’s thermal stability and composition. The TGA has an auto-switching dual range microbalance (0-200 mg and 0-1 gram) with automated pan loading and furnace movement with dual mass flow controllers with automated gas switching.
Imaging and Microscopes MZ7 - Scienscope

MZ7 Microzoom with 10x – 1000x magnification system, 10 MP video imaging at 35 fps, with a field of view of 91 mm to 0.4 mm and a working distance of 35 mm to 302 mm.  System has both a fiber optic illuminator as well as a noise-free LED illuminator. Dual pipe light guides are also included with the system as well as an annular ring light guide.

Dino-Lite Polarizing AD413ZT with boom stand. The Dino-Lite is an extremely portable microscope that hooks into any USB port equipped computer and allows on-site inspection of surfaces.  Included software has built in measuring functions and image cataloging capabilities.

The Buehler AutoMet 2000 is a mechanically driven, non-pneumatic system that requires no air. The Automet upgrades the ECOMET family of manual bases to Semi-Automatic Systems and allows the user to begin the polishing process for later imaging and walk away during polishing thus increasing productivity and specimen consistency especially for multiple users and metallographers with little metallographic experience. The LED display allows easy use and the rim cabinetry is made of durable materials to resist chemicals.

Toyo Seiki Ltd. D-H100 Automatic Densimeter
The Toy Seiki Ltd. D-H100 Automatic Densimeter measures the specific gravity of rubber, plastics, ceramics, and many other materials. The specific gravity can be directly read on the front panel indicator. The range of specific gravity that can be readily measured is 0.1 to 2.0 and requires only about 20 seconds to measure each sample.  It has a very simple operation and interface and with minor calculations information such as the density and volume fraction of fibers in a laminated composite can be computed.
Ross HSM-100LCI Ross HSM-100LCI - High Speed Mixer
The Ross HSM-100LCI is a multi-purpose laboratory mixer with interchangable mixing attachments and mixing tanks.  In the current configuration the mixer is suited for high shear mixing of thermosets under vacuum so as to insure a well mixed resin/hardener system with minimal void content.

The Instron 3344 single column system is designed for both tension and compression tests less than 2 kN (450 lbf).  The system is ideal where portability and/or lab space is at a premium.  The 3344 system is a simple to use system that offers both performance and affordability for quality control and product testing and the 42" test space allows for a wide range of sample sizes.  The available 10lb. and 450lb load cells work well for testing thin sheets, individual fibers, or low strength tensile test specimens.
US Ultratek PCUIT3100/Velmax A-scan/C-scan system US Ultratek Ultrasonic System
The US Ultratek PCIUT3100 All-in-One ultrasonic pulser/Receiver has a 100 MHz A/D board and can drive transducers up to 25 MHz. The combination pulser-receiver allows a wide range of prototyping and offers full control of tech pulse width and pulse voltage for non-destructive testing (NDT).  The system is coupled with the Velmex X-slide x-y translation system and is synced with an in-house code for full C-scan capability.

The Vulcan 3-1750 Box Furnace has a temperature range of 50 degC (122 degF) to 1100 degC (2012 degF) with a precision temperature accuracy of +/- 5 degC and a ramp rate of 0 to 40 degC with 0.1 degC resolution.  The box furnace with a  is perfect for laboratory purposes and has a chamber of 10" x 14" x 12.5".

The DSM X-Plore micro injection molding machine is great machine for lab scale fabrication of molded parts.  The system has full temperature and holding pressure control while only having a shot size of 12 ml. This compact system fits on a laboratory bench and is perfect for fabricating tensile and flex bars for experiments investigating compounding and matrix components over a wide range of manufacturing parameters.

The Bits from Bytes 3DTouch 3D Printer is a quick and easy to use desktop scale 3D printer.  With a resolution on the scale of many higher prices systems the printer is a welcome convenience to the lab for quick prototyping and low load parts. The largest build size is 9" x 10.75" x 7.9" with a z resolution of 0.005" and a planar tolerance of +/- 1% of the object dimension or 0.008" (whichever is greater).

With the output power of 30 Watts, the Agilent E3646A programmable DC power supply provides a great performance at a great price.  The E3646A delivers clean power, excellent regulation, fast transient response and has a built-in GPIB and RS-232 interface. Both voltage and current levels can be set to a
maximum resolution of 10 mV/1 mA from the front panel. In addition, the E3646A can store and recall up to five complete power supply setups using the internal non-volatile memory.

Two high performance workstations, Intel i7-3930K with 12 threads at 3.2GHz (3.8GHz Turbo).  One machine has 64 GB of Ram and the other has 32 GB Ram.  Each machine has 2 x 2TB drives, 850W power supplies, and an nVidia Fermi 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 cards.

Portable Educational Cluster - Generation 1

The portable educational desktop cluster has 6 AMD Athalon II x3 2.8 GHz processors, each with 4 GB ram on independent motherboards with nVidia cards with CUDA capabilities.  This portable cluster was designed by a Baylor undergraduate senior design team under the direction of the PI, and is available for educational and research applications.  The inspiration for the system was from the LittleFe and the Bootable Cluster CD projects, which both have as their goals goal the education of scientists and engineers in scientific computing.
Educational Cluster - Baylor's Little Fe #2 Portable Educational Cluster - Generation 2
This portable educational desktop cluster contains 6 Intel Atom dual core 1.6 GHz processors, each with 2 GB ram on independent motherboards with nVidia cards with CUDA capabilities.  This portable cluster was obtained through the efforts of  the LittleFe project and is available for educational and research applications.

The following is a list of equipment available to the researchers of Sic'em through the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Baylor University.  The following is not a complete list, but is an abbreviated listing of equipment used by the Sic'em researchers in their academic efforts:
  • 30K MTS materials testing load frame with fully computerized control and extensometers
  • Cooke Corp. PCO 1600, a 14-bit CCD camera with 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution (2MP).  The PCO 1600 can acquire 30 frames per second with a minimum interframing time of 150 ns between two frames. This digital CCD camera system is perfectly suited for low light camera applications like fluorescence imaging and microscopy.  It is currently outfitted with a 50-mm lens, but can accept a variety of lenses.
  • Horizontal tensile stage for testing composites under Leica binocular microscope to observe failure processes
  • Non-contact 3D digitizer/scanner, UNIscan by Creaform. The UNIscan offers 3D scanning for complex shape acquisition, damage assessment, digital models and mock-ups, rapid prototyping and packaging design with an accuracy of up to 80 micro-meter at 18,000 measures/s including the ability to self-position, true portability, and data acquisition and analysis software.
  • Environmental chamber for thermal cycling while simultaneously controlling humidity
  • Brabender Mixing Unit with Single Screw Extruder, Cooling Bath, and Pelletizer (for thermoplastics); also Brabender Mixing Unit Attachment
  • Compression molding/PHI hot press (60 ton, heated platens up to 600F), 14”x14” surface area
