Wireless and Microwave Instructional Laboratory

Laboratory #13 Notes

The purpose of this laboratory exercise is to introduce you to the following:
1. The layout of a typical communication system
2. The need for removing the image frequency before down-conversion
3. ADS as a simulation tool in the design of communication systems.

For this exercise you will need to turn in the following items:
1. Summmary
2. Discussion of Results
3. Printouts and Tables as Given at the end of the Laboratory Write-Up
4. Laboratory Write-Up Including Experimental Results

Notes on Experiment 13

The image frequency must be removed before the mixer. If no RF filter is in place, the image frequency will downconvert to the same frequency as your desired signal. This will cause distortion that cannot be removed by filtering. Always make sure the image frequency is removed before the mixer in the design of a communication system.
